Back to School

imagesBack to school is here! Books, uniforms, bags, shoes and so much more… Mumz how are the preparations going?

It takes a lot of preparation at the beginning of the school year. For parents whose children will be joining school for the first time; it is going to be a real challenging period. Begin to talk to your child about school and how much fun it would be. Show pictures and videos of children engaged in activities at school. Take your child to the new premises so that he/she may get acquainted with the environment. But most of all prepare yourself to tackle the morning drop off time and the new routine.

I hope it would be a great start for all Mumz and kiddos.

Mother Baby and Child Show

Music, Fun and Games, TV Characters, Prizes Galore on Offer MBC Show 2010

The Mother Baby and Child Show 2010 will take place at the Dubai International Exhibition Centre (DIEC) on December 2nd – 4th. Event organizers TME promise three days full of fun and games for the whole family. This year there will be an all-new and exciting schedule and we will play host a comprehensive show with traditional Emirati performances to mark National Day for people from different backgrounds, cultures, and religions to come together to experience the traditions and culture of the people of the UAE , along with popular international children’s characters.

TME, the organisers of the show are delighted to announce Pampers, as the headline sponsor.

As well providing free seminars and workshops for new and expectant parents, with an opportunity for mothers to ‘ask an expert’ on a number of important subjects, such as baby’s health and nutrition. They will be introducing some new wonderful technological enhancements to their nappy range.

Pampers are committed to improving the experience babies get from wearing their nappies. They are continually learning from mums and babies. More than 20,000 babies from around the world involving more than 300,000 diaper changes were part of the development of Dry Max. This is one of Pampers’ most thoroughly researched and tested news products ever.

“It is highly reassuring that the new Pampers nappies with Dry Max technology has undergone tests by the manufacturers which were very thorough, and establish that they provide the absorbency and dryness performance people expect from a Pampers nappy. They definitely represent a step forward in terms of lightness and thinness, both of which are likely to improve babies’ comfort and freedom of movement.”
Dr David J. Atherton, Paediatric Dermatologist

“This year we have packed in as many activities as possible for both children and parents. With 25,000 visitors expected over three days, we have also made attending the event more convenient, by providing a full range of support services, such as a fully equipped baby changing and feeding area with free Sudocrem and nappies. Many high street brands will also be on display, many of them with exciting promotions exclusive to the show, including Crocs who will be retailing at up to 80% off RRP” said Shannon Norris, Events Director for TME.

There will also be competitions with thousands of Dirhams’ worth of fabulous prizes up for grabs. The star prize however remains a luxury holiday with Marriott Vacation Club.

Be Inspired by Faryal Amir
Creative Mumz Founder

“I had a lot of free time and did not know how to use it. I felt there were more women of my ilk who cannot find venues to interact creatively. We organise workshops, coffee evenings, story telling sessions for children, post our queries and seek counsel from other members,” Faryal Amir

When Faryal Amir had her second child, she had to give up her job. Feeling cut off from her usual social circle, she instituted Creative Mumz, a platform for women who would share a skill, information, personal experiences with fellow members who are a mix of single women, mothers, aunties and grandmothers.

The group emerged dynamically online with interesting monthly newsletters and other online competitions. Faryal Amir, with little help from close members organises events, develops the newsletter and updates the website which has more than 500 daily visits.

Her efforts have been recognised by some leading newspapers and television channels. A notable number of women in the UAE are associated with the group and lots from all across the world through the web portal; http://www.creativemumz.com

Time For Homework…

Do you get worried when its time for your kid’s homework?!

Homework seems to take up a lot of family time esp. keeps the mum on her toes. I am sure all of you must have derived some sort of homework tacking strategies. Here are some simple rules.

  • Set up a schedule that will allow the child little breaks, and still get the work done.
  • Specify a place for your kid to do homework on a daily basis. This will help him/her to realize what is expected of them. Guide them to organize their work place too for smooth study time.
  • A good idea is to have the computer near the homework station, in case needed for research work.
  • Place a dictionary, atlas, thesaurus and other reference books in that area too.
  • Organize pens, pencils, paper and other supplies so that time is not wasted in hunting for those items all around the house.
  • Appreciate when the child is showing interest and working towards finishing the task.
  • Some children need a push. Talk and explain why homework is important and how a good attitude can do wonders in completing work. Motivation is the key but it will take a lot of time and effort to get the ‘work avoiders’ to get serious. Don’t lose hope, keep trying!
  • Once work is completed, it should all be placed back in folders and backpacks. This will help avoid the trouble faced when projects are forgotten at home.
  • Backpacks must be placed at easy access points in the house preferably close to the main door so that they are picked up quickly the next morning.

HAPPY HOMEWORKING! as my 3 year old says when he sees his older brother at the desk. 🙂

All Mums say…

Found these mummy sayings interesting…all mums say these!

  • Money does not grow on trees.
  • Don’t make that face or it’ll freeze in that position.
  • Don’t put that in your mouth; you don’t know where it’s been!
  • If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.
  • When you have your own house then you can make the rules!
  • What if everyone jumped off a cliff? Would you do it, too?

Twins explore personality types in co-authored work

By Nasheet Jaffer Khan, Community Solutions Editor
Published: April 02, 2009, 22:46

Dubai: Dubai-based twin sisters Mariam and Fatima Masood attempt to help break personality codes through their work of fiction I Know Who You Are.

The novel spins its tale around the nights and days of a 12-year-old boy, Sultan, who stumbles upon magical powers while cleaning a closet, as his family prepares to move house.

What follows is Sultan’s journey to understanding the varied personalities of people, aided by his grandfather.

Being human we have problems with humans,” 25-year-old Fatima said. “Actually, it should be the contrary. Every person has a character skin [type], which affects their manner of interaction and relationship with others.

The book surmises that if you are able to identify the personality type, you can understand people better.

Mariam said that sensitivity and a keen observation of people helped provide the fodder for the story.

She said: “Just because people have physical similarities, they expect each other to think alike, believe or have similar opinions, too. The book broadly categorises the basic personalities.” She is quick to add that they “don’t claim that all personalities can be categorised“.

Employed as kindergarten teachers, it took the twins a year, endless cups of tea and countless “rain cheques” for family gatherings to finalise the book and its prime characters.

When it comes to creating something from nothing there are quite a few things that have to be considered. The development of the character ‘skins’ was a challenging task as we had to make each character as powerful as the other and yet unique,” Mariam said. She added that no character had a negative side to it as “everyone has a good reason for doing what they do“.

Squint-eyed nights of research and belief in their story gave the twins the courage to push the envelope and mail it to the publishers.

Fatima said: “There were times when we used to feel stressed and disappointed, waiting for publishers and literary agents to respond. However, from the time of sending the queries to signing the publishing contract, it only took us three months.”

Thinking of the time we started writing and to see the book published has been a rewarding experience. I feel like going to the bookstore just to see the book there!” Mariam said. Fatima added: “It was similar to seeing the harvest of a crop which has been planted, nurtured, protected and prayed for day in, day out. It is still unbelievable sometimes.”

The twins said they could not have written the book without each other – it was “a joint thought”. They said: “Though we are identical, little is common between us. We still understand each other the best.”

How has the book changed their lives?

They said: “It has simplified it. We know how to deal with people more effectively.

The book is published by Olympia Publishers and is available at Jashanmal Bookstores.

“I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!”…THE BOOK RELEASING IN SPRING 2009

http://iknowwhoyouare.wordpress.com/

” I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!” is written by Dubai based twin authors, Mariam Masood and Fatima Masood. It is being published in the United Kingdom by Olympia Publishers and shall be out in Spring 2009 with the grace of Almighty Allah.

If you are a book lover, this ones for you.

I am among one of the few first readers of the book and I must say its a very gripping piece of modern literature. The concepts put forward in the book are very unique and capture the mind of the reader. You tend to read and re-read the core lines and concepts as you unfold the mystery woven around the characters.

It would be a good handbook to keep as a guide to understand people we live with. I believe the character skins portrayed in the book are very real. As you read the book you tend to say, “Oh! yes, I know this one; it is so and so in my life..oh so now I know!!”

By Faryal

Here is what the authors have to say about it:

I Know Who You Are! is a unique novel which has a blend of fascinating fiction and hard-core reality. It not only tells the readers the story about Sultan and his family but it also reveals the secret of dealing with people successfully.

The book presents the concept that every person has a Character Skin which guides his behaviour and inspires his conversations. If you know a person’s Character Skin, you can understand, respond and deal with him effectively.

“Truth is only valued by the ones who are righteous, for the ones who are possessed by their own beliefs are indifferent to it.” (Mariam & Fatima Masood)

I Know Who You Are! diversifies a person’s perspective through positive thinking. It invites its reads to explore, enjoy, reflect  and analyze the concepts the Character Skins, people, possess.

I Know Who You Are! will be in bookstores in Spring 2009.

MORNING TIME, RUSH TIME!!

www.creativemumz.com

Mornings are always busy with everyone rushing to take a shower, get dressed, grab a bite and leave for school/work. We can reduce some morning rush time stress by doing as much as can be done the night before. Have the clothes ironed and laid in a quick pick up spot. Lay out shoes and socks. Bags packed at night and kept near door, just pick up and leave!

For breakfast and lunch boxes, decide what can be done the night before and what can be left for the morning. Get sandwiches for kids’ lunch boxes ready at dinner time, packed and kept in the fridge. Set the moring breakfast table the night before with plates, glasses, spoons, bowls and cornflakes packs on the table. Some planning and organizing the night before will surley lessen your morning time stress.

You will surely enjoy your first cup of tea!

THE FRIDAY CLASS by Mariam and Fatima Masood

The Friday Class was a result of many isolated moments we spent as teachers… in school, at home, in malls, parks, waiting lobbies and at the Dubai Creek.

As teachers we always feel there is very less time, in class, to tell the children about the many little things they need to remember in order to enjoy life. Since the classes are curriculum driven it becomes difficult to address the day to day challenges, problems and tasks children come across. Not only as teachers, even at home, with our nephews and niece, we realize there are so many things that need adult attention and address.

In order to kill the guilt we thought of the concept of a Friday Class which would have all the little but important things we want to tell children aged 7 onwards.

It is important to say that Fridays and Saturdays are weekly holidays here in Dubai, no school. That’s why the article was named The Friday Class. At home, when children are missing their teachers, they get an opportunity of absorbing some more knowledge of the world… a short message from very concerned caring teachers…

So, for young girls and boys here are some nice things to read and follow in life. Of course also for older people who missed on good teachers and teachings in life!

Minutes invested in goodness help a lifetime.

THE FRIDAY CLASS IS PUBLISHED IN YOUNG TIMES MAGAZINE FORTNIGHTLY.

Eye Make Up-Smokey Eyes

Prashansa sent us this info on smokey eyes…

There probably isn’t a longer running eye makeup trend than the
smokey eye, which is in no danger of going out of style. The key is only  to blend well. Also, make sure to keep all other makeup light or
you risk looking like a clown. You don’t want the rest of your makeup
to compete with your eyes…

Holding the skin of your upper lid taut, apply eyeliner from the inside
corner of the eye outward. Draw strokes into the lash line. The middle
of the line should be a bit thicker than the edges…

Use a cotton swap (or your finger, if you’re lazy like me) to “smudge”
the liner…

Dab an eyeshadow brush into a deep-hued eyeshadow and apply over the
eyeliner to set the line. (Blow on the brush first to remove any excess
shadow). Layering liner with a shadow is the secret to a perfect smokey eye…

Blend shadow well, then follow with eyeshadow…

Mom – Child’s Best Friend!

www.creativemumz.com

There was a time when parents were revered and respected out of fear. Even now parents are respected but more out of love than fear! If fed and nurtured with good values, kids do imbibe the best from you.

Today, the generation is different. They need a ‘mother’ until they are dependent and a ‘friend’ after that. Once their dependence period is over they need someone to talk to, someone whom they can trust, someone who does not get offended with little issues, someone they know will stand by them whatever the case. That does not give them the license to demonstrate their ill behaviour and rule the matter though. With a firm hand of help when in distress and as barrier when moving towards danger, Moms can surely be a great support system for children especially girls.

Kids from a very early age should be encouraged to talk to parents, atleast mothers. They should be initiated to talk about everyday matters – What happened in the school today? Did you play with your friends? Whom did you play with? Did you enjoy? What did the teacher teach you today? Was it fun? How was the trip to school in the bus? Did you enjoy your breakfast? – Little talks that would get them talking to you. Once this becomes a routine they themselves would talk to you about their matters. Many-a-times have I heard parents complain that their child does not talk what is happening. “He/She does not say anything.” One can not make them speak all of a sudden. It’s a process that takes time and initiation. So get started early. If you have not, better get started now as they say it’s “Better late than never”.

Always encourage them whenever they do something good and creative. Be it a class work or homework they did neatly. Be it coloring or something they tried to paint. It can be some rhyme they tried to sing or an effort to help you by bringing a dish from the table. Any good effort from a child is praise-worthy. It’s a reinforcement that even adults like us need. Encouragement really nourishes everyone! This way they will build self-confidence and would make an attempt to get something done. But from the very first do not make them feel that ‘Prize’ is the most important issue than participation when they take part in an event. Teach them to focus and get things done right. The best will win so let them learn to be the best. A healthy competition is what we need not rivalry.

Allow them to make mistakes and realize it. It would be a difficult stage to go through but sure enough it would pass. Remember that every mistake is a lesson towards a positive life. Mothers should be by their side so that they don’t get astray.

It’s truly something super to be a MOM, lot of responsibilities and commitments attached! All the mothers here would agree that it’s wonderful and worth everything!

Earth Day is here… Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!

Its time to reduce some burden we put on our planet. Earth day is here, so lets take this opportunity to remind us to practice the three R’s.

Reduce:

Try to reduce wastage of resources and the amount of garbage we produce daily. Bring your own bags to the supermarket. Use reusable containers for leftovers and in your lunch bag.

Reuse:

Consider buying used CDs, books, games, it will help you save money. Sell your old stuff, you will get money back. Donate your old toys and appliances and give someone a gift!

Recycle:

Create a recycling centre in your kitchen. Involve your kids in the activity. label corner for cans, paper, plastic bottles, glass jars and cartons. There are special recycling bins at the Buhaira Corniche in Sharjah where you can dispose off all your material for recycling.

DE-CLUTTER YOUR HOME AND YOUR LIFE

Article: De-Clutter Your Home and Your Life

How to Get Rid of Excess Items that can be Donated        (By Nihal, Creative Mumz Member)

Ramadan, the month of spiritual cleansing and charity, has come to an end. However, we can continue to donate year round by de-cluttering our homes of excess things on a regular basis.

Tidiness is a learned skill that can become a habit for life. If moms make organizing fun while kids are
young, it will become ingrained in them too. So lets get started!

What constitutes clutter? Anything you no longer use or love which has accumulated over time. Instead of
getting rid of excess things, people tend to find a place to stuff it. Remember, things should be useful,
have a place of its own and be easy to find. Ask yourself: Do I need this? Do I love this?

Categorize things as those you wish to keep, those you could throw out and those that can be given to
charity. Items for donation should be in good condition. Get kids involved with clearing out their
rooms: decide together which toys, books and clothes are useful and which can be donated. Thereby, kids
learn to maintain a neat room with things of actual value. They learn to let go of stuff they no longer
use. They also learn to share such things with a child not as privileged. Make drop-offs at charitable
organizations together so they can see the results of their efforts.

Start with a problem area that you feel you can tackle.

Remember the golden words:
If you don’t use it, you lose it. Once you are done, you can relax in a home surrounded by things that you love and that
create a peaceful living environment.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

Happy new year to all you mumz out there. Its great to jot down new year resolutions but the tough job is to stick to them. Have you made any new resolutions? I think we all do and I suppose we mums are real good list makers!

Here are some resolutions I think all mothers would like to stick to,

  • I will plan and organize my kitchen better, with all food stuff labelled.
  • I will plan my week’s menu in advance so I don’t have to bother to do that thinking everyday.
  • I will give more quality time to my kids, play puzzles, paint with them, play board games, hangman, draw, fly kites, read story books, hop, skip, run and make faces with them! Oh! I love being mom!
  • I will de-clutter corners of my house.
  • I will try some money saving tips my friend told me about!
  • I will work really hard this year to lose those extra kilos. (This one is on everyone’s list 😉 )
  • I will try to give some quality time to myself daily, that I always keep skipping because of my tight schedule. I will not miss my morning walk, or my morning coffee with a friend, I will not ignore my nails, hair or skin just because I could not find that 10 minutes I need to uplift my unkempt look. I will find those 10 minutes daily this year.
  • I will read good books, relax and enjoy life making an effort to forget the pain and sorrow I went through in my continuning journey – life!
  • I will organize things better by keeping a handy planner, listing important dates, my kid’s school events and most important, keep track of “things to do” by making my “TO DO LIST”.

I am sure you all will have much more to add to this list, do send in your resolutions in the comments section and share them with us.

STOCK THAT FIRST AID KIT

www.creativemumz.com

Little children always get into scrapes and no one knows this better than their mother.

Most scrapes are minor and only need home treatment and lots of kisses on the bad ‘boo-boo’. Its important to attend to such incidents fast without the hassle of rummaging through drawers and rooms for a bandage here or an ointment there. An updated first aid kit that has all the essentials is a must-have for any efficient mom. Some pharmaceutical stores will sell pre-packaged first aid kits but you can put together your own with these simple tips. Store these in an unused lunch box out of reach of children. Keeping an accessible, portable first aid kit also makes it easier to carry along on picnics and outdoor trips when bruises and cuts are most likely to happen.

You’ll need:

* Acetaminophen and/or
* Ibuprofen (with a chart for weight-appropriate doses
  and a dosage spoon)
* Band-aids (assorted shapes and sizes for knuckles,
   knees and fingertips)
* Antiseptic wipes
* Antibiotic ointment
* Burn ointment
* Sterile roll gauze (in 3 and 4 inch sizes)
* First aid tape
* Bandage scissors
* Thermometer
* Tweezers and a magnifying glass
* A first aid guidebook

Other standard medicine-chest supplies include sunscreen (minimum SPF 15) and an anti-itch cream for rashes during summer.
Its also a good idea to keep telephone numbers of the closest children’s hospital’s emergency services in the first aid kit, along your child’s pediatrician’s name and number, and prescriptions for any medication your child is taking.

Like charity and hygiene, safety also begins at home, and now you can rest assured that you’re all set to banish that boo-boo.

Playscapes Wall Murals- Decorate your Kids Rooms, Ideal for Nursery

Playscapes Wall Murals are such an exciting concept in kids rooms decorating and nursery decor! We handcraft and hand paint all the childrens’ wall art and kids’ room accessories, add Velcro pads to the back and then package our wall mural kits and freight them worldwide direct to your door!

The Jungle theme was the first design created by Playscapes and remains the favorite to this day! Brightly coloured Jungle animals with friendly faces will adorn your childs playroom or bedroom. The gorgeous little African Rondarvel will make decorating your childs bedroom your greatest thrill.

All you do is paint the wall in your chosen colour, plan your design then simply peel away the backing tape on the murals and adhere. In a couple of hours you will have the most gorgeous room that you did yourself! Another bonus is it is also interactive. Children are encouraged to pick the apples off the tree, fly the bees around and place them back. This improves their hand-eye coordination and fine dexterity. Another bonus is of course if you find you have to relocate, simply take your Playscapes kids’ murals ( or wall art) with you and remove the Velcro without marking the walls!

When ordering at Playscapes, please mention that you heard about Playscapes from Creative Mumz.

Back To School

www.creativemumz.com

It is time to begin school very soon. Back to school means preparation for both, mums and kids. Mothers need to sort out things, organize and plan ahead of time to pack interesting lunch boxes, buy books and uniforms, find new ideas to get the kids to finish homework and much more.

The key is organizing. Here are some ideas to prepare beforehand;

  1. Prepare lunch bag cards for the week. You can make cards to go on the fridge with what has to be packed for each day of the week. This will save time and reduce daily stress of thinking what to prepare.
  2. Kids have a fluctuating routine during summer break. Start put them to bed earlier at least one week before school starts. This will help them to get into school routine easily.
  3. Prepare lists for what has to be sent to school esp. on the first day, like books, school supplies, lunch bag, any special item that the school had requested for. A separate list should be prepared for each child keeping in mind that a primary school student will have to carry different things as compared to your little one who is just beginning school.
  4. Find new and interesting ideas to motivate children to finish homework without a fuss. Surf the net and read some articles that will help and prepare you to deal with homework issues.
  5. Mark important school events and meetings on a calendar to avoid missing any special days.
  6. Reduce morning stress by preparing clothes and lunch bags at night. Set plates, spoons, cups, etc. for breakfast at night to avoid rush in the morning.

Planning ahead will make going back to school a pleasant experience!

Life..cherish it!

www.creativemumz.com

Life is a precious gift, be it your own or that of a loved one. At times we are so engrossed in our daily routine and regular chores that we forget to cherish, preserve and nurture this precious gift. Hard times in our life make us realise that perhaps we are not cherishing enough what we are gifted with, how valuable we are to others and what people around us really mean to us. So I believe we should thank God more often, for each breath we take in peace, for he time we spend with our loved ones, for the strength He gives us to go through difficult situations and then for blessing us with happiness, family, love and health. So smile more often, enjoy the happy times cause we never know what is there for us in the future!

Happy Living!
